That’s a wrap!

Come Run With US

Come Run With USBy all measures, the 2013 Baltimore Running Festival was the biggest and best yet. We had perfect weather–thank you rain gods for holding off–and a perfectly executed set of races, leaving participants more than happy with the results. Perhaps the most poignant moment of the weekend was the official start of the marathon, led by local Boston Marathon bombing survivor Erika Brannock, who returned to a road race for the first time since last April. Her incredible spirit and strength served as true inspiration for all those toeing the line on Saturday.

How did things wrap up at the races? Let’s take a look at some stats:

  • Marathon winner (male): David Berdan with a 2:30 (first Maryland-based winner)
  • Marathon winner (female): Elizabeth Perry with a 2:58
  • Half marathon winner (male): Stephen Febish with a 1:11
  • Half marathon winner (female): Jen Ecker with a 1:25
  • 5k winner (male): Luke Rodina with a 16:12
  • 5k winner (female): Jennifer Bleakney with a 19:06
  • Male and female relay teams: Falls Rd. Running Store

Those are the running stats. Now lets look at the random stats that make a running festival of this size a success:

  • 27,000–the number of runners in the festival this year
  • 1,000–the number of volunteers
  • 500-the number of Baltimore City police officers working the event
  • $1.7 million–the amount raised for local charities
  • $38 million–the estimated economic impact of this event
  • 17,000–gallons of water on the course
  • 6,700–gallons of Gatorade on the course
  • 12–the number of countries represented running the races

As you can tell, a lot of blood, sweat and tears goes into making an event like this successful. It’s that joint community effort, though, that landed the running festival among the top 15 fall marathons by the Daily Burn website. We’re guessing you agree.

So tell us: how was your race-day experience? We want to hear your stories!

TNT and the BRF

Georgia and Bruce Cleland, TNT founders

In its almost 13 years, the Baltimore Running Festival has been a key event for many charity organizations using the races as an avenue to raise money for their causes. None, perhaps, more so than Team in Training, benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In fact, since 2005, when the two organizations began working together, […]

Our GEICO pacers get it done

GEICO pacers

Last year, I got to serve as a pacer for a local metric (26.2k) marathon. It was such a rewarding experience and I enjoyed every minute of it. I’ve also been on the other side of the fence, using a pacer during marathons. From both these experiences, I can tell you that pacing is both […]
